Angela Chong, a renowned designer, has created a truly unique and captivating piece of art and design with C/C, an illuminated seat that not only provides a comfortable sitting area for the public but also serves as a mesmerizing light show at night. Inspired by the properties of acrylic sheet and programmable LED lights, C/C is a testament to the fusion of art, architecture, and technology.
C/C is a sculptural piece that takes the form of the letter "C," symbolizing the connection and conversation between people of diverse backgrounds and cultures. The seat is made up of 80 pieces of 15mm thick acrylic sheets, carefully connected at three different points using stainless steel bolts and nuts for stability and safety.
What sets C/C apart is its ability to transform from a clear, dynamic shadow during the day to a colorful light show at night. The edges of the acrylic sheets are illuminated by 350 LED nodes housed in the base of the seat. The programmable LED lights, controlled by the Color Play 3 system, create a rhythmic and radiant display of colors, turning the seat into a mesmerizing work of art.
Commissioned for iLight Marina Bay 2010, C/C has been showcased in various light festivals around the world, including Vivid Sydney 2011, Amsterdam Light Festival 2012, Jerusalem Festival of Light 2015, Norrkoping Light Festival 2015, Shenzhen in 2016, and Horsens in 2017. Its striking design and captivating light display have captivated audiences and garnered international acclaim.
Angela Chong's design process for C/C involved extensive research and consideration of both function and aesthetics. The modular system allows for easy assembly, while the ergonomic components ensure comfort for users. Overcoming challenges such as connecting the heavy acrylic sheets without compromising aesthetics and aligning the LED nodes with each piece of acrylic sheet to optimize light intensity, Chong has created a design that seamlessly combines form and function.
C/C's innovative design has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures category in 2018. This prestigious award honors designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
With C/C, Angela Chong has not only created a visually stunning piece of art and design but also a symbol of connection and conversation. This illuminated seat invites people to come together, engage in dialogue, and celebrate the beauty of diversity and culture.
